Bidding on RARE ANTIQUE WOVEN SILK BOOKMARK in the "Stevengraph Style" made by the Paterson Ribbon Co in Paterson, NJ. Great detail of ship, eagle and flags. Message: ONE FLAG, ONE LAND, ONE HEART, ONE HAND, ONE NATION EVERMORE! This sentiment is from a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes about the voyage of the "GOOD SHIP UNION ". Written in 1862 & has 12 stanzas--last 3 lines are the saying on this ribbon. This bookmark or ribbon is probably from the 1890's--don't know the reason for the issuance of this. Some similar woven bookmarks from other makers were available at the 1876 Philadelphia Expo & Chicago World's Fair of 1893??? Can't be too many of these out there--very neat. Even if not a Stevengraph, it is beautiful and the history of the poem is very interesting and different.Name of the maker is on the back flap. Measures 8 1/2 x 3. Excellent condition only very minor soiling.
