A captivating oil depicting the Archangel Raphael, one of the seven archangels who stand before the Lord. The Archangel Raphael's name in Hebrew means "God has healed". He holds a fish whose organs were used for medicinal purposes and is thus a symbol of healing. Raphael's tunic is richly embroidered to show his high status as an archangel. The archangel Raphael is set over the spirits of men, and is commanded to heal the earth, which the fallen angels have defiled. Raphael is in charge of healing the diseases and wounds of all people, and in charge of taking vengeance upon the fallen angels and their agents. Originally influenced by Spanish and Italian artists, this school was comissioned to paint sacred art in churches and monasteries throughout the Peruvian city of Cusco after the area was devastated by an earthquake in 1650.
