Up for auction is this wonderful antique dresser box dating from the ART NOUVEAU period, about 1890. The massive box measures 12 1/4" wide, 2 3/4" high and 5 1/2" deep, including the lift handle, and weighs about 9 pounds. The box is highly decorated and features a band of beaded scroll work the runs around the sides. The top of the box is the center of attraction and is divided into three sections. Each section highlights a cameo with raised figures. The center oval displays two exquisitely detailed Greek goddesses, nude with flowing robes and hair. The two side medallions portray cupids or cherubs, one with wings and a horn and the other with bow. I believe that the box originally had enameling surrounding the figures, but only remnants of backing remain. T is some rust in these areas, as seen in the photos. I took the photos in two batchs and the true patina color is the darker one shown, not the bright gold. It is in good working order, the hinges are good, the ball feet are intact and the wooden interior is clean. The box has a dore bronze finish with a nice patina. I do not know the metal alloy content of the box and I have not tried to clean it. T are some marks on the bottom of the piece and one on one end that look like paint spill, but the rest of the finish appears to be in good condition. Please refer to the photos for read more
