This is a really handsomely made and beautifully painted decorative lidded Mettlach Pottery drinking stein from the German firm of Villeroy & Boch, this one is a 1/2 Liter Beer Stein (marked near the left reverse upper side with the 1/2 next to a horizontal black slash), numbered on the bottom 2133, and featuring one of the charming and whimsical designs from artist Heinrich Schlitt of Gnomes or Dwarfs, this particular version has the Gnome sitting perched in a tree, with his pipe stashed in his peaked cap and him involved in contemplation over his own stein of lager...the top of the rounded lid features the colorful design incorporating the crowing Rooster and the rising and smiling stylized Sun at one edge....the bottom of the stein also features the incised Mettlach Castle logo, the words GES. GESCH., the roman numeral II, the 00 (for 1900?), and the number 25, all incised, plus the incised word Mettlach with an insignia beneath which I believe is VB, and the painted number 18...it's very much painted in the Art Nouveau style, circa 1900...it measures approximately 7" in height, just over, and is approx. 8 1/4" to the top of the Gnome's pewter hat on the thumb lift, with the diameter at the base approx. 4 1/4", and at the rounded lid top approx. 3 1/2" including the pewter rim...the condition is excellent, and the color is beautiful all around, and the interior is bright and clean, and must've been used strictly for display.....this is one in a series of rare collectibles and antique items, vintage magazines and bulletins, Hugo Gernsback Magazines on Radio and Electricity, and other items of ephemera and rare and unusual books and magazines relating to Fashion, Christmas and Holiday Collectibles and Cards, Electric Vehicles, Trucks, Automotive and Hollywood Memorabilia, Natural History, Science, Geology, Art, Aviation, and other subjects of great interest (take your pick), that I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks at whipplesbooks on ebay.
