ARTIFACT U.S. FRIGATE CONSTITUTION VAL-KILL INDUSTRIES, ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. This old oak letter opener is a relic made from wood from the U.S. Frigate Constitution . One side is a metal plaque (brass?): “THIS MATERIAL WAS TAKEN FROM / THE ORIGINAL HULL OF THE / U.S FRIGATE CONSTITUTION / KEEL LAID 1794 REBUILDING 1927.” On the other side of the handle is a paper label reading, “VAL-KILL INDUSTRIES / HYDE PARK, NEW YORK.” My research found that Val-Kill Industries was founded by Eleanor Roosevelt and three friends in 1926 and was in business until 1937. This business, located in Hyde Park, N.Y., made furniture and wooden accessories along with pewter ware. I also found that recently another wooden letter opener attributed to Val-Kill Industries was sold on eBay (#320865309959) that has a similar metal plaque stating, “This wood was part of the White House roof erected about 1817 and removed 1927.” This letter opener measures 9-1/2” in length. There is a small notch out of the blade portion and it also looks like a repair was made where the handle portion meets the blade portion.
