Artist Sherman Smith 6 1/2" Angelita Miss Unity UFDC 1963 Convention DollScroll down for larger viewsWe are presently selling an estate collection of Sherman Smith Dolls. He was a superb doll artist who has been deceased for many years. His dolls were hand carved from black willow and painted, with beautifully working peg joints.This is a Angelita or the Tuck Comb doll, one of Mr. Smiths more famous dolls. This one was named Miss Unity, and created as the UFDC (United Federation of Dolls Clubs) souvenir doll for the Los Angeles Convention in 1963. The dolls were made in several sizes, up to 7'' or so. This is the 6 1/2'' size.She has a one-piece, hand carved wooden body, jointed at the hips, knees, shoulders, & elbows, with painted white stockings & black shoes. Marked: S. Smith 1963.The face is nicely painted in the typical Sherman Smith style. She has smooth black hair with wispy curls around her face, and a molded yellow hair comb. Miss Unity wears a miniature calico print dress decorated with pin tucks on the skirt and tiny lace trim. Also lace-trimmed pantalets and petticoat. On her head is a white felt bonnet with black ribbon ties.The doll is in very excellent condition, with working joints and has been displayed in a clean, smoke free home.
