This is an original 1899 Corpus Christi check signed by Frank Robinson Texas Ranger. He became Sheriff of Nueces County, Texas from 1917 to 1923. Prior to that he was a Texas Ranger in the Frontier Battalion from 1892-1897. He was later involved in a shooting with the Ku Klux Klan in Corpus. In October of 1922 Robinson shot to death, Fred Roberts, a local businessman with Klan connections while he sat in his car of a Corpus store. Anti Klan and pro Klan factions were up in arms as the situation deteriorated and it appeared that mob violence was about to erupt in Corpus Christi. Robinson was charged with murder and was to be tried in Laredo. Meanwhile the Governor, sent Ranger Captains Frank Hamer and R.W. Aldrich to Corpus to arrest hotheads and stop the threat of wide spread violence. Hamer and Aldrich with the help of three other Rangers and the sheriff diffused the situation with key arrests. Robinson was exonerated at the sensational trail but moved his family out of Corpus fearing Klan retaliation. When he completed his tenure as County Sheriff in 1923 he was invited to join the Texas Ranger Force which he did. Texas Ranger Frontier Battalion items are very hard to come by. I will enclose all copies pictured with the original check plus a copy of the photo of Captain Rogers and Hamer. Two copies are pay vouchers signed by Captain read more
