This is a gorgeous RARE AUTHENTIC ship's strong box or safe for business men travelling by sea in the late Edo or Meiji era. Wonderful craftsmen working with keyaki wood and iron. Circa mid 1800's. This one is a bit larger then other sea chest and they are hard to find because they did not make these as often as the furniture. size (inch) W 22 5/8" D 18" H 19 2/16" weighs about 61 pounds. A sea chest probably from Sado Island. Keyaki case with a drawer, sliding door and hinged door. There is a crack all the way down the back of the chest. Other from that it is in beautiful condition!! I do have 3 keys that originally came with it, I just misplaced them but I am looking for them!! I have done some research and that is how I got this information. This is an Estate find, this person had a collection of Japanese Antiques. Pottery, art plus more. I did aquire some of the pottery and the art work. I will be listing in the next weeks. This is about 150 years old or more. The ship owners and captains of the vessels owned some of the most beautiful and well crafted tansu made during the Edo and early Meiji eras. They were stout chests for rigorous lives. The ship's safe or sea-chest was generally a smaller chest (compared with clothing chests) for the safe-keeping of papers, seals, and money. I see this same chest sell at major Auction
