This is the kind of item that leaves me open mouthed and drooling! This is an appliqued quilt top done in the colors and style of the mid 19th century Baltimore Album quilt, although this is not quilted. The designs are worked in green calico, red and gold on a muslin background. This consists of 16 hand pieced, hand appliqued blocks that probably started out at 18 inch squares that are more like 17.5 inches squares after seaming. Since there is no backing, we can see the secrets of the quilts that are normally hidden.The stitching on the blocks is a study in patience! The stitches are so tiny! The whole thing is bordered by a red band that was machine sewn on, folded over and then hand stitched to secure it. That is the only machine stitching I can see on this. The blocks and green borders between them are hand pieced together. This came to us from a local antique dealer who has had this in her collection for at least 30 years and she obtained this out of a house in Cambridge, Maryland which is in Dorchester County on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. This was made after the famous Baltimore Album quilts, but with the interpretation of the women of the Eastern Shore, bearing in mind the very hot summers; this was meant to be used as a light cover, so there is no backing or filling, or quilting for that matter. You can tell by the consistent repetition fabric throughout the piece that the fabric was bought for this project, and not sewn from whatever materials were available, letting us know that this was a presentation quilt, perhaps for the celebration of a marriage, and thus was used for special occasions and not for general use by the family. It dates from the third quarter of the 19th century, and the women who made this probably had relatives in Baltimore and saw the renown Baltimore album quilts being made there, brought the design ideas back to Cambridge and created their own versions which are a little more provincial and folksy. Despite that, they poured their heart and soul into this and passed it on from mother to daughter over several generations until finally being released to this auction before you now. Here is your chance at long last to acquire an unusual version of an iconic textile. This measures 81 x 81 inches and has 3 small repairs as visible in the pictures.
