Up for auction is a copy of A Hard Day’s Night, the third LP by The Beatles, released in 1964 on Parlophone, cat no PMC 1230, a UK mono pressing. One of the greatest LPs of all time. This is a rare early pressing with a cover printed by Ernest J Day & co, with similar construction to Please Please Me, ie a thin paper flip-back rather than thicker card. It’s also a slightly different colour to the more common G&L covers (“the EJ Day covers have more of a purple tint”, according to Bruce Spizer’s “Beatles On Parlophone” book). The record is a first pressing with “recording first published” details, matrix details: XEX 481-3N 1 M, XEX 482-3N 3 MT. Condition: pretty impressive. There are three marks on the first three tracks of side one and Tell Me Why, but these don’t affect the sound, which is uniformly fantastic. Side two is problem-free. The labels have a few spindle trails but are otherwise excellent. There are a couple of small sections of the flipback missing (see photos) but the cover is otherwise in great condition; no writing, creases, splits etc. All round VG+, verging on EX. My grades: I use a 10-point scale: M-; EX; VG+; VG; VG-; G+; G; G-; F (fair); P (poor). I never use mint as a grade for used records. I am a long-time (25+ years!) record collector, and play-grade where possible. I don’t use stock photos: the item in read more
