This is a beautiful Victorian bisque figural vase depicting one of the Barrison sisters, a popular and risque group of five sister entertainers of the 1890s. Their spectacle included dancing, singing, and posing with their cats (in a quite suggestive place) all over Europe. This Ms. Barrison is featured wearing the quintessential Barrison Sisters outfit and of course, is accompanied by her infamous cat. This is a book piece, featured on page 85 of Sharon Hope Weintraub's popular book Bawdy Bisques & Naughty Novelties. It is made of high quality bisque porcelain, is very beautifully detailed, and is exquisitely made. As an example and indicative of its fine quality, the makers of this piece even managed to give this lady intaglio eyes, despite her smaller size! A superb and lovely piece for the collector of this type of novelty porcelains, fine Victorian bisques, buxom and risque Victorian vamps, or of bathing beauties! This piece measures 5 1/4 inches (13 1/2 cm) tall, and is unmarked. It certainly has a Schafer & Vater appeal to it, but of course I can't be sure this is the maker. It is, however, undoubtedly of German origin, and it likely dates to the late 1890s, when the Barrison Sisters were at their height of fame. Condition is very good. The worst flaw is that t is a chip to one of the cat's ears; t are also about 3 chips read more
