BLACK FIGURED PLATE from POMPEII Antiquity Reproduction The BLACK FIGURED PLATE from POMPEII. The plate with attic black figures, largely used for decoration, usually represented important moments of the ancient mythology. The figures depicted on the plate are Achilles and Hector during their duel. This BLACK FIGURED PLATE is about 7/8" high and at it widest about 12 1/4" across and includes a hole for hanging. FIGURES: As described in Certificate of Authenticity ACHILLES: Son of Peleus and Tethys. His original name was Ligirones and was called Achilles (a-kgile = without lips) by Cheiron, because his lips had never sucked maternal milk. A legend says that he was plunged by his mother into the water of the river Styx, which made him invulnerable except his heel from w he was held during the immersion. Achilles was fed the marrow of a lion and other ferocious beasts. He was trained in medical arts. Achilles participated and conquered 23 cities during the War of Troy. Famous was his duel with Hector to avenge the death of his friend Patroclus. He was killed when wounded by Paris in his only vulnerable spot: his heel. HECTOR: One of the most brave Trojan warriors during the war with the Greeks. He was the son of Priam; loving husband of Andromacha.
