BLACK SANTA CLARA PUEBLO POTTERY SIGNED BY NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST: ELAINE SALAZAR This traditional deeply carved black Santa Clara Pueblo pottery vase is signed by well respected Native American Indian artist, Elaine Salazar. This elegant Santa Clara pottery measures approximately 3.75" width diameter x about 2" tall. This is a beautiful piece with an impressive stone polish and attractive contrasting unpolished center. This is a beautiful piece without any chips or cracks. Elaine created this piece with the time honored Tesuque tradition by collecting clays from the Santa Clara Pueblo of New Mexico. The clay undergoes many preparations before it is molded into the finished product. The clay is rolled into long pieces and layered using the hand coiled method which includes smoothing the coils by hand into their final form. The piece is polished by rubbing a smooth polishing stone over the artwork until the clay shines. The polishing stones are highly treasured and usually passed down through generations of descendants. The pottery is fired in an open air outdoor pit. The end result is a stunning piece of Native American pottery often referred to as "Clay Mother," as many pieces break during firing.
