HALWOOD ACKROYD BLUE GLASS MINERS LAMP Hailwood Akroyd Miners lamp These miners lamps were made from 1927 under the title Hailwood & Ackroyd Ltd. This is a heavy, beautifully machined solid brass, iron, and blue glass lamp. The glass is intact and has etched on the blue glass all British and the Nos 5A--7 cannot read it all see photo; the fuel reservoir is in good condition the wick raising wire is missing.The brass plate in the middle of the lamp is a bit faded,has the No 328 on it,on the brass just below the glass is stamped 368,on the brass tank is the No`s 328 368.It measure`s 10 1/2ins high.After 1927 the company became known as Hailwood & Ackroyd,The lamps with blue glasses were much in demand and sold for 3/6d during WW2, It was found that a dim blue glass cannot be spotted from 2000ft by German bombers.These lamps were used by ARP to warn of unexploded bombs and gas leaks and can be seen in the dark.So many of these Davy lamps were in demand during WW2.The building is still there in Morley near Leeds today, owned by Wabco, makers of automotive parts.The Hailwood and Ackroyd lamp uses the protective 'bonnet' first introduced to flame safety lamps by Marsaut in 1871.
