The Bootblack trade was highly competitive in Hartford, Connecticut going back to the late 1800's. Controlled by the city through the issuance of Bootblack Licenses. The internet has an abundance of information about the Bootblack trade in Hartford. This is an original Bootblack shoe shine box with three metal licenses attached. These are for the years 1962, 1963 and 1964. Years embossed on the plates were the year in which they expired. Left to right the licenses are embossed in black, blue and red. They measures 2.5" X 3.375." Various small dents and light rust around the edges. The 1964 license is the cleanest of the group.The wood box has an ornate cast iron foot rest which shows wear from use. Box handmade out of 3/4" wood. It is about 11" across. 8.5" from front to back. Stands about 8.75" tall-without the foot rest. Box is still sturdy-large nails used for construction. You can see the wear to the black paint. As found, except we wiped the box down with a rag.
