The volume itself measures about 7" by 9¾". The volume is bound with a black hardboard. The tips and spine are reinforced with a red material. Library marks are present. It was the successor to Scribners Monthly and it continued publication until the 1930s. It was renowned for its excellent articles and among other things, for its beautiful engraved illustrations. T is very in depth coverage of the Civil War. Many authors had their works published for the first time in The Century. From the first Century Magazine made much of its illustrations, and both directly and by the effect on its competitors, its advent had much to do with the improvement of American engraving and printing.
