UNION PACIFIC U-50D DOUBLE DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE This is a almost brand new, model of Union Pacific's GE U-50D double diesel locomotives. Conceived in the steam to diesel period, the double diesels were an earnest attempt by the railroad to replace with diesel power the famed Big Boy steam locomotives for hauling heavy tonnage at reasonable speed over the mountains of Utah and Wyoming. Using components from traded in locomotives, GE created several of these monsters. Sadly, they were not particularly successful. However, this unfortunate history should not stop you from running one of these on your model railroad. It is an eye catching model first, its size and secondly its unusual appearance. I, personally have never run this model as my planned layout never happened and I'm now selling what I had acquired. The detailed handrails etc, are exquisite as is the see through louvers in the top of the car body. A see through interior invites a spectacular paint job if that is your pleasure. Plenty of room in the car body for a DCC decoder and sound module. The KMT tower drive is known for having a distinctive growl, but with a bit of careful lubrication and adjustment, can be made to run very smoothly.
