A Breath of the Wilds, by W. Robert Foran. Forward by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. London: Robert Hale, Ltd; 1958. First Edition. Rather Scarce and pricey. About 9" x 5.5"; 206pp; photos. Paper on boards in Near Fine condition [other sellers on the Internet call it cloth, but it's not]. Dust jacket, now in a Mylar cover, in Good condition, with superficial paper loss on front; chipping top and bottom spine; bit dusty on back cover. Contents clean and tight, with bookplate and written name and place - Grasslands, Marandellas, March 1961 (this was in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe). In fact, I looked up the original owner (1911-2005), and he was a scientist/ researcher, wth a few publications. But, back to the author. Foran (1881-1968) was one of the original European officers of the British East Africa Police (1904). One of the foremost ivory hunters at the time, in Africa and a trophy hunter in India, later he turned to the camera. Still, he had many close calls, that he wrote about in this and earlier books. He was a founder of the famous Adventurers Club of Chicago. He returned to Kenya in 1947 and was there during the Mau Mau uprising.Much of this book is about his observations of African wildlife, but he is always the sportsman, and there are plenty of acecdotes.
