The helmet was most famously worn by Orde Wingate, the eccentric British general who commanded the Chindits. The Chindits were a long range penetration group operating behind Japanese lines in Burma, supplied by air and attacking lines of communication. Wingate was almost always photographed with an Enfield and the pith helmet, which became symbolic of the genius general. Original British WW2 Wingate Tropical Pith Helmets are rare to encounter today, and so What Price Glory, the incomparable California military reproductions house, had these painstakingly replicated in India; in many ways, they exceed the originals.
