A RARE EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST VASCULAR LAND PLANTS, COOKSONIACOLLECTED FROM THE SILURIAN ROCKS OF WENLOCK EDGE, SHROPSHIRE ENGLAND Collected from the Silurian Wenlock Limestone Series of Wenlock Edge, Shropshire, England, circa 425 million years old approx., this is remains of one of the earliest known land plants, Cooksonia sp. Cooksonia is an extinct grouping of primitive land plants. The earliest Cooksonia date from the middle of the Silurian (the Wenlock epoch) the plant is very primitive and only grew to a few centimetres in height This is the earliest well-known land plant, and flourished during the late Silurian and early Devonian, it is named after Isabel Cookson, who occupied herself with intensive collecting and describing plant fossils. Cooksonia is the most primitive known vascular land plant. The earliest fossils of Cooksonia have been found in Middle Silurian Wenlock stratathis specimen is on a piece of matrix measuring 4cm by 5cm approx., the fossil measures 1.5cm approx.RARE REMAINS OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST RECORDED LAND PLANTSA POINT OF HISTORICAL INTERESTTHIS SPECIMEN WAS COLLECTED ONLY A FEW MILES FROM THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE GREAT NATURALIST CHARLES DARWIN IF PICTURES FAIL TO APPEAR CORRECTLYJUST I have many more rare and interesting items listed in my other auctions.
