VERY OLD RARE Orthodox Crucifixion bronze icon CROSS AGE: end XVII century. TECHNIQUE: Made of bronze. Heavy casting. SIZE: 7.7 x 13 cm SUBJECT: The shape of the Cross is the so called - "eight-pointed', i.e.with three horizontal beams: the upper part the "title", the secondfor the hands and the third as footboard. The shape of the Cross was adopted from Byzantium , while the inclination of the lower beam is a purely Russian development. In Eastern compositions Christ is nailed by four and not by three nails as in Western art. The Savior is pictured dead or alive, i.e. with eyes open or closed, depending on the different moments of the Passion. In later compositions, the Body takes a slightly curved position emphasizing, in an abstract manner, Christ's suffering as the Son of Man. The Golgotha on which the Cross is implanted, is a stylized rock, with the skull of Adam symbolizing the Redemption: Adam sinned - Christ redeemed. On the top of the Cross is depiction of Our Lord - Savaof (God the Father) In the halo of Jesus we see three Greek letters which mean " He who is ". Two Seraphims hover in the upper beam, their hands covered with cloth as a sign of worship and devotion, flanking the Holy Chost descending over Christ.
