Faith in Amida Nyorai remained largely confined among the court, scholars and monasteries until the Kamakura period (1185-1333), when it became popular by the new Buddhist sects (the Pure Land sects) committed to spread Buddhism to the illiterate commoner. They preached that salvation of the ordinary person and stressed pure and simple faith over complicated ritualistic rites and doctrines of earlier Esoteric Buddhism.
