Setting off on his own, much like his inventive predecessors with just a modest portfolio of equipment, Butler is beginning to make and distribute clubs under the name of, well, Butler Golf. "I've been building clubs for more than 20 years, so I'm not a stranger to that aspect," said Butler, who is based in Murrieta, Calif. "I've either been making clubs that were other people's ideas or providing designs for other people to produce." Many golfers may have hit a Butler-designed club, and never knew it. Among the companies who have purchased rights to use his clubhead designs are Titleist, Wilson, Lynx and TaylorMade. Feature content Information: • A detailed look at the Butler clubs "A few years ago, I came up with some new designs I really believed in, some functional but different and attractive ideas that I began to produce for myself," Butler said. "At first, I wasn't planning to make this into my own business, but last year I decided to try it and, in many ways, just see if I could get some recognition." With an 8,500 square-foot facility to assemble, package and ship equipment, Butler has launched a family operation that includes wife Luann, and sons Ryan, 22, and Matt, 19. Clubmaking capacity would be in the range of 500 units a day, if the demand were such. Butler has labeled his inaugural driver and fairway metals the SS series, which stands for sole shafted. The clubs feature a shaft that passes through the crown and is anchored directly at the sole plate. According to Butler, this method, augmented by a polyurethane vibration dampening device, helps the club square at impact and generate greater power while increasing launch angle without increasing backspin. The promised result is a long, boring trajectory and enhanced roll after flight. In making the SSTi driver, Butler has also invented a forged face that fuses nickel-chromium and titanium together to create a superhard surface, a technology that Butler asserts is superior to the "trampoline effect" provided by other clubs because of the reduced backspin imparted.
