The print is a hand-colored copperplate engraving printed on wove paper circa 1799 / 1817. The sheet measures 11 X 8 1/2 inches and is in good condition aside from light age toning, scattered foxing spots and small chips on the right edge. The image is titled "Erne." It is signed by the colorist in brown ink in the lower right corner "Matilda Hayes." The print comes from William Hayes "Rare and Curious Birds Accurately Drawn and Coloredfrom Their Specimens in the Menagerie at Osterly [sic] Park" published by Wm. Bulmer and Co., London(first edition 1794-1799) (second edition 1817).Since this was signed by Hayes daughter, whom he employed to hand-color his plates, I would guess the print is from the first edition. The print is a very finely colored engraving from an extremely scarce source.George Glazer Gallery has plates from this work listed for $450 each and Darvil rare prints for $400.00 each (including the Erne plate, but unsigned.) T is nothing printed on the reverse side. The print is shown on a black background in order to show the entire sheet. This is an antique print guaranteed to be over 180 years old. Buyer to pay $2.50 postage and handling in US; $3.50 to Canada; and $5.50 international - for any amount of prints.
