You are Bidding on a hand colored engraving from 'Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds, with their Descriptions, from the Menagery of Osterly Park. ' 'ONE OF THE FAMOUS, EARLY COLOURED ILLUSTRATIONS OF ORNITHOLOGY' (Wood) with MANY plates signed by several members of the Hayes family. The plates are taken from drawings by William Hayes commissioned by Robert Child of Osterley Park in Isleworth, Middlesex, and together 'form a record of a unique collection and add some coloured pictures of foreign species to the small number then available. Hayes was the first author to record a single private collection of live birds. CONDITION: For a 215 + year old plate, the condition is GOOD. The Print Will NOT Be Accompanied By Its Appropriate Text Page.(s) HAYES, William (1735-1802) Background Hayes was the first author systematically to record a single private collection of live birds; such a project was not attempted again until 1846' (Jackson Bird Etchings , p.135). In his 'Advertisement', William Hayes states that, although he did not intend to publish these drawings, 'having so large a family, all under my roof, and dependant on my labours, and having only a precarious income, determinable on my decease', he felt it necessary to make some provision for their future. Of Hayes's 21 children , seven are credited with assisting in the production of the present work, which was also intended to demonstrate their 'early genius' to the public, and in the present work plates have been signed by William, Ann, Annette, Charles, Emily and Matilda Hays. As Jackson notes, each book was assembled as demanded, using extant and re-etched plates and new images, coloured and sometimes signed by different members of the family, resulting in 'a unique collection of plates and text' (p.128).
