C1940s Abstract Figurative Modernism Silkscreen Print Signed by Julio De DiegoDescription This listing is for a signed Spanish American modernism abstract figural silkscreen print on paper by Julio De Diego. The print is matted, framed and protected by glass. The frame measures 20 ¼ by 25 inches or 51.4 by 63.5 cm. The visible area of the print measures 12 ¼ by 19 ½ inches or 31.1 by 49.5 cm.The print features two entwined figures made of geometric shapes and lines in pink, green, blue and black. It is signed on the bottom right "DE DIEGO OCT 46." This is for the Spanish born American artist Julio De Diego (1900-1979). Julio De Diego he had been an apprentice in a scene-painting studio for Madrid theatres. In 1926 he arrived in Chicago where he designed magazine covers, did fashion illustrations and got a commission to decorate two chapels in St. Gregory's Church. He also designed a laundry bag for the Hotel Sherman that led to a considerable increase in outgoing wash. He painted street scenes, landscapes and murals for the WPA. As an artist, he fits into no easy pigeonhole. He was far from what is commonly considered to be the mainstream of modern art.The piece is in excellent condition; there is a small crease in the paper near the center bottom edge, this is from the printing process.
