A large and impressive octagonal pottery serving platter with dark blue/black transfer decoration, probably made in Staffordshire, England, ca. 1840-50. It shows a center scene of buildings, a well-dressed couple and two children, and a statue, with a coastline and water in the background. The border is a repeated scene of a couple with two dogs frolicking and alternating floral pattern. The printed marks on the back are "WALMER / E. H." within a scroll cartouche on the rim and the number 2 in the center. The Walmer Castle and Gardens are located in Kent in Southeast England. Built during the reign of Henry VIII, it is noted as the home of the Duke of Wellington in his capacity as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. In excellent condition with no damage, no cracks, no dings, no chips. T are the usual manufacturing flaws and imperfections to be expected, some light surface discoloration, and some wear on the bottom . It measures 17 1./2" x 13 1/4" and is heavy and beautiful!
