This is a very nice 1 escudo gold cob from the reign of Carlos and Johanna. The coin has a deliberate crease through its center and was most likely folded in half at some point in its history. I have seen these coins called "witches pieces" as they were believed to be protection from a curse. From my research, coins were also folded in half in the medieval period to be offered at shrines of Saints in return for a miraculous healing. For further information search: "INTERPRETING_SINGLE_FINDS_IN_MEDIEVAL_ENGLAND_-_THE_SECONDARY_LIVES_OF_COINS". This coin is 23 mm in diameter and weighs 3.4 grams. This coin is genuine and solid gold. The coin will be shipped to the winning bidder via insured priority mail when paypal payment is received and clears. Thank You
