This is a nice pitcher/vase in a rich red brown rutile glaze from CC Cole Pottery or Seagrove Pottery, Seagrove NC. It is a nice example of North Carolina Southern folk art pottery most likely turned by Dorothy Cole Auman (1925-1991). An example of the form (number 101) can be seen in an early CC Cole catalog pictured on page 32 of Lock, "The Traditional Potters of Seagrove, North Carolina". Examples of the glaze can be found on pieces attributed to CC Cole Pottery and to Seagrove Pottery in Lock (page 144) and in "North Carolina Pottery, The Collection of the Mint Museums" (page 66). Lock notes in his book that the Coles along with the Cravens, are the oldest potting families in the Seagrove/Sanford area. Dorothy was one of the first Cole women to become a potter and was a fifth generation Cole potter. She worked with her father, CC Cole (1885-1967) at his pottery and operated Seagrove Pottery (1953-1991) with her husband, Walter (1926-1991), until 1991 when they both died in an auto accident. They ran the pottery as a team with Dorothy turning the pots and Walter preparing clay, mixing glazes, and operating the kiln. She and her husband, Walter, received the North Carolina Arts Council Folk Heritage Award in 1989 in recognition of their skills with pottery and their dedication to promoting the potters of the Seagrove/Sanford area.
