Rare Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Floral Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER," Edgefield, SC origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with slightly flared rim and large tab handles, covered in a heavy greenish alkaline glaze. Decorated front and back in kaolin slip with a slip-trailed number 3 surrounded by a large flower head with numerous petals. Impressed below rim on one side with one of the maker's marks of potter Thomas Chandler, which reads simply "CHANDLER". A finely-decorated example of Edgefield stoneware. 3 3/4" hairline from rim. One handle with a chip, two nicks, and a 2" horizontal line. Small rim chip. H 14".
