This is an incredibly well-executed charcoal on sandpaper painting or marble dust drawing. When I bought it, I was told that it was an image of a man in a boat on the river Styx? That’s quite possible because often schoolgirls who made these drawings copied allegorical images by Hudson River painters, such as Thomas Cole. But to me it looks like a man rowing in a sailboat on the Hudson River. The detail in the tree and clouds is amazing. The drawing is matted and framed in a contemporary “wavy” black frame with gold accents and it has plexi acrylic “glazing.” The painting does not appear to be signed. It’s in excellent condition – very sharp and clear image. I’m pretty sure this is a late 19th century piece. The live area of the drawings (inside the mat) is 11 ½" x 9 ½". With the frame, the painting measures 18 ½" x 16 ½“ on the wall. Please check out some of the other sandpaper or marble dust paintings I've listed, which I’m currently selling from my private collection.
