Chinese Cloisonné Tray. A Connoisseur Services Appraisal Old Chinese cloisonné is one of the most delicate and expensive arts Produced by the Chinese people. It is an art form built on a metal base, usually of bronze in the earliest days. Copper wire fashions the design on the bronze form separating each of the openings or cloisons. Each cloison is filled in with enamel. Each color, depending on its sensitivity to heat, is fired. The higher heat resistant colors are applied first and each successive color demands a firing. After the final firing the piece is polished and considered complete, this tray has no chop, which is a personal seal and used as a signature by the artist. It is marked china and was produced before 1950. The design is wildly exuberant with many color and forms, which include an incense burner, books, flower filled vases, garden seats, butterflies, and insects. The lip of the tray continues with each of those designs on the inside and outer edges as they continue on the reverse. It is minutely articulated and exquisitely beautiful. Its age enhances its crisp and undisturbed beauty. Circa: before 1950. Nine (9) inches by twelve (12) inches by one (1) inch.
