Up for auction is this very choice and attractive specimen of Fluorite on Calcite with Marcasite from Pints quarry, Raymond, Black Hawk County, Iowa. The specimen measures 2 3/4 x 1 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches and features six (4 main, larger ones) fluorite crystals to slightly over a half inch on a bed of zoned calcite crystals on limestone. The specimen is in exceptional condition! Pints quarry is a classic Iowa mineral locality and is especially known for these rootbeer fluorites. These fluoresce yellow under longwave and shortwave UV light, with the best response under the former. I believe that the quarry is flooded and is no longer accessible, but I'm not positive about this. The fluorite crystals on this piece have a wonderful sheen to them and are dotted with very tiny rosettes of marcasite crystals. The only damage to the naked eye is a small corner cleave on the backside of the largest crystal, away from view. This piece is from the Duprey collection that I recently acquired in Michigan and was collected by Ted and Marie Duprey on one of their trips to the quarry almost 30 years ago. As I unwrap their collection, I'm finding more and more goodies and this is certainly one of the better Pints quarry pieces to surface thus far.
