Description: On offer is a striking Pwo helmet mask from the Chokwe people (Angola). Perhaps the best-known style of mask of the Chokwe peoples is the Pwo mask, symbolizing the female ancestor & worn by male dancers in ritual ceremonies. Youthful yet spiritually mature facial features characterize this highly sensitive mask. Representing tears, raised scarifications are present under each eye. The chin is also accented by raised scarifications. The mask's forehead bears a distinctive, raised cruciform -- or cingelyengelye -- while above that is an incised headband. The open mouth displays sharply filed teeth. Supported by a stiff, woven-fiber form, the bamboo-beaded headdress makes a dramatic statement. Despite some imperfections in the wood, including the mask's chipped right nostril & repair to the left of the mask's mouth, the piece is in very good overall condition.
