1861 Union Soldier Letter -- Aboard US Ship St. Louis -- "âe¦officers and crew suffering from the effects of climate and long confinement on board shipâe¦we have sent home sickâe¦at least a third of the ships companyâe¦" AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 4page letter from a Union soldier named "Joshua" aboard the U.S. Ship Louis and dated 20 August 1861. Written to his brother, the letter talks about looking forward to returning home, and expresses a tone of frustration. Reads in part: "âe¦We are all looking anxiously for our Releefâe¦we will sail for home as soon as the "Rebles" arriveâe¦would sail in a day or two for Fort Pickers. Theâe¦Officer has orders to send us Northâe¦have been ordered north immediately after the Reinforcement of Rebelsâe¦officers and crew suffering from the effects of climate and long confinement on board ship.
