Fantastic Large unglazed (or bisque) Claycraft tile, Los Angeles 1921-1939. This was purchased in the Sacramento California area in 2004-2005 timeframe, from a local dealer that was unsure of its origin. I searched my references for about 6-8 months before I stumbled on it - in "California Tile," Vol I, page 163., then later noticed that it is also pictured on the back cover of "California Tile," Vol II. It is not signed with the Claycraft mark, however I have studied every aspect of this tile in comparisan with printed photos in "California Tile, The Golden Era 1910-1940," Vol I, and "The Encyclopedia of American Art Tiles, Region 6, Southern California" by Norman Karlson (page 151), and relief details are exact. As you note, this tile being bisque, the outer ridge has not been trimmed off and measures 16 and 1/2 inches X 8 and 1/2 inches, while the inner borders (as you see them glazed in the book) measure 15 and 3/8 inches X roughly 7 and 1/2 inches. All these measurements are pretty close but may be off just a tad due to my marginal measuring tape. Tile weighs 5 pounds, 10.5 ounces. Reverse is signed "Bob" and a hand written price that appears to be 15.00 dollars. I tried to corelate the read more
