Clockmaker's Depthing Tool 9 X 4 inchesBaltic Birch Plywood5 Plys Depthing Tool – An Indispensable tool The clockmaker’s depthing tool offers the clockmaker, the repairman, the collector and tinkerer, a fast and easy way to adjust – observe – measure – prove – duplicate – troubleshoot – most every application of gearing in clockwork without having to partially assemble the movement. With a depthing tool you can closely examine the meshing of the pallets with the escape wheel or the meshing of any other pair of gears without the plates in the way allowing you to see any imperfections you might have otherwise overlooked with the gears between the plates. The clockmaker’s depthing tool is mostly associated with clockmaking allowing the clockmaker to mark out where the pivot holes will be. That is true, but a depthing tool is much more than that; it does have a place in the repairman’s tool box also. There is no other tool that will allow a repairman to quickly diagnose a gear to pinion mating problem and or to check for misaligned bushing problems. By having a depthing tool available the pace and quality of a repairman’s work will greatly improve. The reason for this is that the repairman won’t waste as much time as before in disassembling and reassembling the movement every time he wants to test the mating of a pair of gears. Because of the time and frustration involved in repeatedly disassembling and reassembling the movement, a lot of repairmen stop making adjustments when they get close, thinking close is good enough, instead of making one or two more adjustments to make it perfect. With a depthing tool the repairman eliminates this problem and he can take the time to do the job right. Once he eliminates the frustrating act of disassembling and reassembling the movement his meaningful production rate per hour increases. And once any frustrations are eliminated from his work the quality of his work improves. There is no doubt that the depthing tool is not an every day tool. Bur there is also no doubt that the depthing tool is an indispensible tool for that special occasion. It has long been said that the quality of a man’s work can usually be told by the tools he uses. And the irony of the situation is, once the repairman has a depthing tool available the repairman will increasingly find more opportunities to use one thereby increasing both the pace and quality of his work exponentially. An offset crank runner is provided for adjusting, observing, testing, measuring, truing or depthing escape wheel/pallet combinations when the crutch follows the centerline of the escape wheel. You can see in one of the photos how the depthing toll can be placed on its side on the edge of a table so that the crutch can hang vertically just like on the movement. Included are two cone pieces. These are used where a large center is needed, such as mainspring barrels and unmounted wheels. These are shown in use in the photos. Included are two trumpet pieces. These have an inverted cone in one end. They are used with large arbors such as mainspring arbors. These are shown in use in the photos.
