ANTIQUE GERMAN STONEWARE This item is not an industrially manufactured bulk product. What you see is an eminently rare piece of German craftsmanship. Recognizable by the irregularities from the very crafting, this storage jar comes from a time when pottery was thrown instead of casted galore. Despite its age it is very well-preserved. Discolorations and disruptions of the salt glaze are possible, yet of inferior importance. Westerwald Pottery is made from peculiar clay selected by a master craftsman palpating and chewing it. The salt glaze develops during the burning process by scooping common salt into the oven at a temperature of 1250 degree Celsius. Tby the chlorine in the common salt and the hydrogen in the clay's moisture transform into salt acid which exhausts trough the chimney. The glaze arises from the remaining sodium conjoining the surface of the clay. If you value originality, craftsmanship and tradition, this storage jar will adorn your house as just these characteristics form part of its various virtues.
