COLORFUL ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN "CHAJLI" DESIGN CARPET, Southern Caucasus Mountains, Kazak or Karabagh region, Circa 1900 to early 20th century, and coming fairly good condition for the collector. The size is: 3'-9" x 7'-3" (114 x 221 cm). In the antique rug book literature, Caucasian carpets with the "Chajli" design have usually been assigned to the Moghan or Shirvan weaving regions for attribution based on structure. This particular specimen has natural varigated wool warps and wool wefting dyed red, two shoots between rows of knots, more typical of the Kazak and Karabagh weaving districts in the Caucasus. The colors are a mixture of natural and non-natural dyes with a color palette quite similar to known Karabagh-group weavings from this time period. The pile condition is evenly low and there are a few worn spots with a bit of pile missing. There is an old repaired fold line area on the bottom left border area that has been sewn secure (see photos 9 and 10). There are a couple small repaired areas on the middle left side (see photo 8). The outermost red and white "pin" border has been removed around the perimeter of this weaving and with the entire perimeter now secured with new over-castings.
