Up for auction today is a military button from the Columbia River, most probably a trade item. This artifact was found a mile or so South of the Wiskey Dick Creek area on the West side of the river. A large part of the river bank had fallen in due to the spring high water runoff. We sifted through that material and found many artifacts, this fine button being one of them. This is the only button we found during our many years of hunting the river. Included with this auction is a letter, hand written and signed by Emery Strong. Mr. Strong may have been the foremost expert of Columbia River artifacts. His book, Stone Age on the Columbia River is still one of the most sought after resources when researching Columbia River artifacts. He was also a profilic contributor to Screenings, the Oregon Archaeological Society monthly publication. Dad apparently had some questions about the button which were answered by Mr. Strong who provided considerable information about the button in his letter. You'll be hard pressed to find an artifact with better provenance. Don't miss the opportunity to acquire such a fine Columbia River trade item. As always, please email me with any questions or for additional photos.
