The hard-swinging group includes Thad Jones and Joe Newman on trumpet, Frank Wess and Frank Foster tenor sax, Charlie Fowlkes on bari sax, Benny Powell on trombone, Freddie Green on guitar, Eddie Jones and Gene Ramey on bass, Gus Johnson, Sonny Payne, and Buddy Rich on drums, and Joe Williams and Ella Fitzerald on vocals. The styles range from hard-hitting big band swing to light, laid-back shuffles and ballads, to Joe Williams crooning and going back and forth with Ella on a session.
