The convent is located in Suzdal, a town in Central Russia, situated northeast of Moscow, 26 km from the city of Vladimir, on the Kamenka River. The history of the town dates back to at least the year 1024. For centuries it functioned as the capital of several Russian principalities. It forms part of the Golden Ring of Russia. After a decline in political importance, the town rose in prominence as a religious center with numerous monasteries and a remarkable ratio of churches to citizens: at one point, forty churches for four hundred families. The box is made of papier-mache and hand painted in Fedoskino, one of four Russian lacquer painting centers. Signed by artist Ivanova. The box is traditionally finished with a coat of red lacquer on the inside and has unusual marble style decoration on the outside. The artist used fine brushes and a paint made of egg-based tempera. A filigree design is painted with paint made of gold leaf. The segment of mother of pearl was inlaid onto the box before it is painted. New. Mint condition.
