Please note that although this chest and the elephant ivory inlays are antique, and were obtained legally, we are forbidden by EBay rules to offer its sale outside of the United States so as not to break the laws of any country. International bidders please EMail me with your concerns. This documents chest comes from one of the Convents we work with, and it's on consignment for auction. This convent celebrated the 300 th anniversary of its founding just a few years back. The chest has been meticulously maintained through the years by artisans, who donate their talent and work, to help out the cloistered Discalced Carmelite nuns who live t We suspect the box dates from before 1821, as this is the year when Peru declared its independence, and the Catholic Church and its convents lost all government funding. With little or no money, pieces like this chest could no longer be made. The chest is covered with inlays, of wood, elephant ivory(Legal) and mother of pearl. The wood inlays have colors that are natural to the wood; they are not stained . The hinges appear to be replacements taken from another chest and the locking mechanism works with a replacement key; we suspect it has been restored at some point. Other than that, the chest is entirely original with a small compartment on the inside for ink and pens. Its size is 19.5 inches
