Provincial copper assarion of Elagabalus, 218-222 CE Struck in Markianopolis in Lower Moesia. A low denomination copper coin showing a bunch of grapes. It was common practice to join two letters together like the ΩN on this coin, saving both time in making the die and space on the coin. Many fewer of these provincial coins were issued than mainstream Imperial coins, so both obverse and reverse die matches can easily be found. This and the wide variety of reverse types make these coins an interesting and economical collecting area. Size and weight: 17x18mm, 3.19g. Obverse: AVT K M AVR ANTΩNINOC (the ΩN ligate) Laureate head right. Reverse: MAPKIANOΠOΛITΩN (the ΩN ligate) Bunch of grapes on a length of stem. Reference: AMNG I 923; Varbanov I (English) 1384.
