You are bidding on a beautiful Coushatta basket made by the legendary artist/basket weaver, Lorena Langley. This basket is 6" in diameter and stands 6" tall (with the lid); it is made from raffia and the needles from the Long Needle Pine (Pinus Palustris) that is indigenous the American Southeast. The straight stitching is extraordinarily even and dense; Ms. Langley was one of the most gifted and creative basket-makers of the Coushatta Tribe. Her hospitality, knowledge of materials and skills were top notch. She was kind enough to invite me to her home on dozens of occasions and shared a great deal of information regarding the gathering of materials and the way that baskets were/are made. She taught her son, Ronald, how to weave in cane and he became one of the finest Coushatta basket weavers to ever craft a river cane basket. I purchased many baskets from Lorena Langley directly over the years with the understanding that I would be keeping some and selling some to promote and extend the beauty of this craft outside of Louisiana. The interest in these baskets circles the globe with clients/collectors in San Francisco, Singapore, Paris, New York, Louisiana and many cities and countries in between.
