Only one genuine banknote is known to exist and it was sold at auction in March 2006 from the estate of Samuel Mills Damon for nearly $300,000 . (See below) NEVER OFFICIALLY DISPLAYED SINCE 1910 The art subjects are a series of six denominations ($5-$10-$20-$50-$100 & $500) bank notes from the Kingdom of Hawaii , circa 1880. Several of the denominations were made in two different designs. They were in common use during the days of the Hawaiian Monarchy. The Kingdom of Hawaii as it was known at that time ceased to exist with the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani during the "Bayonet Revolution" in 1893. All the notes were recalled around 1910 and destroyed. Two possible collections exist; one in the Hawaii State Archives and one belonging to the estate of Queen Kapiolani. I say "possible" because neither set has ever been displayed publicly. All these beautiful bank notes were eventually cancelled, redeemed and destroyed making the Hawaiian Kingdoms currencies among the rarest in the world. Imagine, all examples of this incredibly important example of the kingdom being lost for all time? HISTORY IS RE-DISCOVERED Now fast forward to 1999 when a poorly reproduced, monochromatic set of old copies were discovered. Though faded and distorted, the engravings were still recognizable. When I saw the designs I realized the importance of embarking upon a restoration project that was mostly unsuccessful and extremely frustrating. It wasn't until 2002 that new computer software made this task possible. Over the next three years I completely re-captured the original engravers art and detail and on Jan 1, 2005 I displayed them for the first time among a group of friends and art ists. Almost immediately they began to comment about how the notes would appear if they were painted in colors to enhance the beauty of the engravings. During the following 12 months I proceeded to hand paint each note with water colors. The original paintings are not for sale, but these replicas were printed using special acid free paper and the highest resolution reproduction color printing presses available. Each note is individually applied by hand to 100% acid free, museum quality mattes using the "floating" or "raised" method. T are no other examples of this quality and enhanced by art istic coloring anyw in the world for sale to anyone at any price. Although these examples are replicas, they are the most accurately reproduced examples anyw and a total of five years was spent restoring and painting them for sale.
