Like all good secretaries he had a keen eye for detail and people. In his capacity he saw all official reports, letters, etc. and came to know all the officers of the Regiment and details his opinions of them sparing no one-some he highly resopected; oitghers he saw as misfits. He was in all the planning for the march and left with the Regiment on May 15th and stayed with it until after the battle on June 25, 1876. He details all that happened on the march as far as the landscape, orders coming in and the good and bad events of the march On the day of the battle he was assigned to the units behind Custer's five companies, and was involved in the two day siege by warriors who had destroyed Custer- in a fight just four miles from Custer, w more Medals of Honor were won than any fight in history, he writes of the siege and officer behavior-much of which was extremely poor especially as these seven companies had been ordewred by Custer to com to his aid and certain officers he names acted as cowards and even drunk. He was one of the first on Custer's mile long battlefield two days later and saw the various army positipons of the dead, mutilations, etc. Almost at once both the army and government began a huge coverup of what actually took place as many in both the army and government had too much to lose had the truth come out, and he even witnesseda a fake map, that would be accepted as official being drawn up. From all this he was able to reconstruct what truly happened at the batle which was quite differtent from army reports-many of which are still accepted today. Roberts put this in the form of a manuscript for a book, and showed it to the General's widow to read first. Libbie Custer then would ask him not to publish it for all the troubles it would cause, and he gave it to her respecting her wishes. It lay forgotten in her personal possessions until near 1950 when these were bought by Custer scholar Dr. Larry Frost. Recognizing the importance of this, which would chnage history, Frost had it printed but in an extremely limited edition, impossible to find today, for a few select Last Stand scholars. This is an exact reprint of the original, a book Custer authority Robert M. Utley who often appears on tv documentaries, calls "Extremely vital in understanding exactly what did happen and why; the best book ever done on the subject by a very educated man who was t who gives us the facts that can not be disputed...an absolute must for any Custer library." This reads almost like a novel; great history told as if you were sitting in a room and Roberts was talking to you- a rare combination even in writers of today. Book is mint.
