3 Daguerreotypes 1840s BEARD Same Named Woman MIDDLETON This is a group of three Daguerreotypes of the same woman and dating to the 1840s. One of the daguerreotypes has her name on the back 'Mrs Margaret Middleton - wife of Chas Midd''. I have listed a similar lot his week from the same source, that may feature the woman's husband. Each of the images is contained in a leatherette case and each has a gilt surround. Two of them have 'Beard Patentee' on the lower edges of the surrounds and these two also have deep cases with domed lids. The other is in a shallower case and the surround has no patentee stamp. The images are 2 inches (51mm) x 1 1/2 inches (38mm). The two Beard images have some marks to the plates and have some marks on the underside of the glass covers. The non-Beard image has lost some contrast, but has very little in the way of dust or marks under the glass or in the plate. The cases are complete, but have some wear to the hinges. They also have some light scuffing to the surfaces. Richard Beard (1801 - 1885) was more entrepreneur than photographer. He secured the patent for both the Daguerreotype process in England and the Johnson and Wolcott camera in the early 1840s and set about making the whole process more commercially viable.
