A hard-to-find 7 1⁄2âe Dark Cobalt Blue HistoricalStaffordshire plate from the important and very popular Shell Border Series by Enoch Wood & Sons, c. 1830. The transfer is labeled Southampton, Hampshire and shows a river scene with several sailing ships and large buildings on the far shore. The border is decorated with a variety of sea shells and the plate is marked with a faint Enoch Wood Impressed mark w/ Eagle. The plate is in very fine condition: dark blue color and crisp transfer. The surface is virtually free of scratches, etc. and only a very well-done repair to a small edge chip at about 3 oâe(tm)clock keeps it from being âe~mintâe(tm); this chip did not extend more than 1⁄4âe into the plate. The Shell Border series is both popular and important, showing American and English views in a variety of forms. It was made for the American market and is eagerly sought after (and very expensive when you find it!). Jeffrey Snyder pictures a plate with this view in his book Historical Staffordshire: American Patriots and Views (p. 144), and it is #140 in the Armanâe(tm)s book Historical Staffordshire: An Illustrated Check List (p. 62). Buyer prepays, plus postage.
