This is a Depression Green... Glass and Metal... Hanging Fly Trap. I had this piece of glassware for some time... and had no idea as to what it was... or what it was used for. A long time glass dealer stopped in the shop one afternoon... spotted this piece an proclaimed... Â"Boy... I havenÂ't seen one of these in a long time!!!... After a bit of prodding... he finally reveled the secret. Â"ItÂ's a Hanging Fly TrapÂ"!!!... Let me give you some measurements... and then try to explain how this thing works!!!... It stands 5 and 1⁄2 inches tall... with the cap on... but not including the metal hanging device... and itÂ's about 3 and 3/4 inches across at the widest point. The Â"capÂ" just sets in place... it doesnÂ't screw on or anything like that. On the bottom tÂ's a 1 and 1⁄4 inch opening... and three short Â"legsÂ". I see one very tiny chip on the outer edge of the top rim... itÂ's small... and I see one area on the bottom that appears to have a piece of Â"foreign materialÂ" imbedded in the glass... and has Â"spalled outÂ" about a 1⁄2 inch piece of the body glass. The surface is Â"ruffÂ' in this area. But both of these defects are in areas not seen when the Fly trap is displayed. Even so... I want to point these out. Keep them in mind when bidding. Now... how does it work???... You lift off the glass cap... lean the body of the Â'trapÂ" to one side... and pour in some Â"sugar waterÂ". TÂ's a raised rim around the inside of the opening in the bottom... and the sugar water is contained in this area. Then you just hang the device up... using the metal Â"collarÂ" thatÂ's attached to the neck. The Â"flyÂ" detects the sugar water inside... flies up through the opening in the bottom... and is trapped. It seems that Â"fliesÂ" have never figured out how to fly down to escape danger... they always fly up!!!... How clever!!!... What do you think???... ItÂ's an attractive piece of glassware... and IÂ'm told these things really work!!!... With the three short legs on the bottom... I believe this would also work when setting on a table. The legs hold it up high enough off the table top that the Â"intended victimÂ" should still be able to enter from the bottom. IÂ'm finding no marking of any kind on this interesting piece of glassware... as to who might have made it. I think the Â"ideaÂ" may be from early times... but IÂ'm not sure if the Â"Fly TrapÂ" is. I use that Â"Depression GreenÂ" term to help describe the glass color. However... it sure looks like it could have come from Â"days gone byÂ"... and would fit in quite nicely in any Depression era display. Just an unusual... interesting... attractive... and probably quite useful piece of glassware!!!...
